G42 Unveils NANDA Hindi Language Model at UAE-India Forum

The bustling intersection of technology and business between the UAE and India found a new milestone at the recent UAE-India Business Forum. In an exciting development, G42, a leading AI and cloud computing company based in Abu Dhabi, launched NANDA, an advanced Hindi language model. This unveiling marks a significant leap in bridging language barriers and facilitating smoother communication within and beyond the Indian subcontinent. The announcement comes after the success of the JAIS, an Arabic LLM launched last year by G42. The announcement was made in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi during the UAE-India Business Forum in Mumbai on September 10, 2024.

The Genesis of NANDA

NANDA is a 13-billion parameter model trained on approximately 2.13 trillion tokens of language datasets, including Hindi.

NANDA was named after Nanda Devi, second-highest mountain in India, after Kangchenjunga.

The model was trained on Condor Galaxy, one of the world’s most powerful AI supercomputers for training and inferencing built by G42 and Cerebras.

NANDA’s release will mark a significant milestone in the realm of AI for India, offering over half a billion Hindi language speakers the opportunity to harness the potential of generative AI.

The name NANDA pays homage to the age-old cultural ties between the UAE and India, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge. But why was there a necessity for such a model? India, with its diverse linguistic landscape, has embraced technology as a linchpin for economic growth. Yet, the hurdle remains, as many technological solutions are predominantly designed with non-Indian languages. Thus, the creation of NANDA ushers in a fluent, sophisticated AI model capable of understanding, processing, and generating Hindi.

Dr Andrew Jackson, Acting CEO of Inception, says that, “G42 has a strong track record in the development of language and domain-specific LLMs. With NANDA, we are heralding a new era of AI inclusivity, ensuring that the rich heritage and depth of Hindi language is represented in the digital and AI landscape. NANDA exemplifies G42’s unwavering commitment to excellence and fostering equitable AI.”

Manu Jain, the CEO of G42 India, has said that India has solidified its position as a “global technology leader”, with many initiatives like ‘Digital India’ and ‘Startup India’ emerging under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

As the country stands on the brink of AI-powered growth, G42 is proud to contribute to this journey with the launch of NANDA in support of India’s AI ambitions,” says Jain.

Features of the NANDA Model

  • Highly accurate language comprehension
  • Seamless integration with existing technology infrastructures
  • Ability to cater to regional and dialectal variations in Hindi
  • Robust learning capabilities to continuously improve over time

These features position NANDA as a ground-breaking tool for businesses, educational institutions, and governments focusing on Hindi-speaking regions. Its adaptability and potential applications promise to redefine how individuals and organizations interact with AI-driven technology in these areas.

Impact on Businesses and Technology

G42’s NANDA model is poised to revolutionize how businesses operate in a multi-lingual environment. This revolutionary innovation is specifically tailored to enhance the efficiency of companies that operate in Hindi-speaking regions. Here’s how:

Enhanced Customer Engagement

  • Personalized customer interactions in native languages
  • Improved customer service capabilities with 24/7 AI assistance
  • Development of localized content to engage users more effectively

By addressing and responding to customers in their native tongue, businesses can reduce the disconnect that often exists in regional communication. This application is particularly pertinent for sectors such as e-commerce, healthcare, and customer support, where precise understanding and prompt response are crucial.

Empowering Technological Advancement

  • Facilitating integration into existing AI frameworks
  • Enhancing machine translation accuracy for Hindi texts
  • Providing data-driven insights and analytics for Hindi content

Technology developers and software companies view NANDA as a formidable asset due to its accuracy in semantic understanding and contextual analysis of Hindi. It enables developers to create more intuitive and culturally relevant applications, boosting the rapid technological progression in India’s growing tech landscape.

Cultural and Educational Outreach

The NANDA model’s influence extends beyond businesses to cultural and educational realms. It serves as a conduit for cultural preservation and educational advancements.

Cultural Preservation and Promotion

  • Documenting and digitizing traditional knowledge and folklore
  • Translating historical texts with contextual accuracy
  • Facilitating cross-cultural exchanges and projects

G42’s use of NANDA to foster the preservation of Indian culture reflects a strategic investment in acknowledging and valuing linguistic diversity. By supporting documentation projects and ensuring high fidelity translations, NANDA aids in conserving heritage while inviting wider international dialogues and understanding.

Boosting Educational Accessibility

  • Providing high-quality translations for educational content
  • Supporting language learning through AI adaptive learning models
  • Enabling access to global educational resources through Hindi translations

NANDA’s deployment in the educational sector is transformative, providing students with access to high-caliber resources and learning aides irrespective of language barriers. This broadens the educational horizon for millions and helps democratize access to knowledge.

Future Prospects of NANDA

The unveiling of the NANDA model signals a promising future for AI-driven applications in multilingual settings. Looking forward, G42 plans to iterate NANDA’s capabilities continually, drawing on extensive datasets and machine learning insights to refine its language understanding further.

Adoption and Integration

  • Scalable solutions across various sectors and regions
  • Collaboration with technology partners to expand its reach
  • Adaptation in more Indian languages, potentially expanding linguistic coverage

Through strategic partnerships and continual refinement, NANDA has the potential to set a benchmark worldwide, inspiring similar initiatives in other countries with diverse linguistic landscapes.
